Diabetes on the Rise Among Teenagers – New York Times Blogs

Nearly one in four American adolescents may be on the verge of developing Type 2 diabetes or could already be diabetic, representing a sharp increase in the disease’s prevalence among children ages 12 to 19 since a decade ago, when it was estimated that fewer than one in 10 were at risk for or had diabetes, according to a new study.

This worsening of the problem is worrying in light of recently published findings that the disease progresses more rapidly in children than in adults and is harder to treat, experts said.

The event raises awareness,  in the hopes of finding a cure.

The walk kicked off at the state capitol complex.

 People hope the event will change the lives of people dealing with diabetes, which impacts thousands.

Youth Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes Rates Soar – USA Today

Diabetes and pre-diabetes have skyrocketed among the nation’s young people, jumping from 9% of the adolescent population in 2000 to 23% in 2008, a study reports today.

The findings, reported in the journal Pediatrics, are “very concerning,” says lead author Ashleigh May, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“To get ahead of this problem, we have to be incredibly aggressive and look at children and adolescents and say you have to make time for physical activity,” says pediatric endocrinologist Larry Deeb, former president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association.
